According to a tipster, Samsung might rename two models in the Galaxy S series of smartphones, starting with its smartphones that are anticipated to debut in 2026.

    Yogesh Brar (@heyitsyogesh) claims that Samsung could rebrand the Galaxy Ultra as the Galaxy Note, while the ‘Plus’ model could be replaced with Pro. This suggests that the South Korean tech conglomerate could be looking to rename two of its high-end smartphones, while the standard model’s moniker might remain unchanged.

  • Harvard and Google Brain Mapping: Unprecedented Detail

    A groundbreaking project by Harvard University and Google has produced the most detailed map of human brain connections to date. This achievement focuses on a cubic millimetre of the cerebral cortex, extracted from a patient during epilepsy surgery in 2014. Over a decade, a team of biologists and machine-learning experts meticulously analysed this small tissue sample, which contains roughly 57,000 cells and 150 million synapses. Their work marks a significant advancement in brain science, providing an unprecedented level of detail in understanding the brain’s wiring.

    The process began with staining the brain tissue using heavy metals, which bind to lipid membranes in cells, making them visible under an electron microscope. The tissue was then embedded in resin and sliced into extremely thin sections, each just 34 nanometers thick. This technique converted a complex 3D problem into a more manageable 2D one, resulting in a colossal dataset of 1.4 petabytes. To piece together these 2D slices into a coherent 3D model, the team utilized machine-learning algorithms developed in collaboration with Google. This involved aligning the images and automatically segmenting the different cell types, although manual adjustments were required to refine the accuracy of these segments.

    Oppo F27 5G is confirmed to debut in India soon as the company’s next F-series handset. While the Smartphone Manufacturer is yet to reveal an exact launch date, the purported Oppo F27 5G price and specifications have been leaked online. The upcoming F-series phone is said to be available in two RAM and storage configurations. The Oppo F27 5G is tipped to run on MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset. The handset is also said to have an IP64 rating and will reportedly feature a 50-megapixel primary rear camera, along with a 5,000mAh battery.

    An alleged marketing poster obtained by 91Mobiles Hindi suggests that the Oppo F27 5G will be priced at Rs. 22,999 for the base 8GB RAM + 128GB storage variant in India. The top-of-the-line variant with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage could be priced at Rs. 24,999. It is tipped to be released in Amber Orange and Emerald Green colors.

    The Oppo F27 5G will reportedly be available for sale starting August 18.

    Tecno Pad is believed to be in the works as the first tablet offering from the brand. The Transsion Holdings subsidiary is yet to confirm its existence, but ahead of it, images and specifications of the Android tablet have emerged on the Web. The Tecno Pad is expected to debut as a budget offering with a 10.1-inch display. It is said to be powered by a MediaTek Helio G80 chipset. The Tecno Pad is likely to feature a 13-megapixel single rear camera and could get a 7,000mAh battery with 18W wired charging support.

    A report by Naija Android Arena shared alleged renders and specifications of the unannounced Tecno Pad. The renders show the tablet in grey and gold colour options with narrow bezels on top and bottom.

  • Swiggy UPI Launches for Quicker Payments

    Swiggy UPI was launched in India on Wednesday. The on-demand food delivery services platform has collaborated with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to roll out its UPI plug-in solution that aims to improve the payment experience by reducing the number of steps it takes to complete a transaction and making the whole process quicker. The feature is already live on the platform and users can take advantage of it to get food and grocery deliveries.

    According to Swiggy, its new payment method leverages NPCI’s UPI Plugin which was introduced in 2022. It eliminates the requirement for a Third-Party Application Provider (TPAP) license from merchants when offering UPI services within their apps. Users can carry out transactions without leaving the Swiggy app, potentially minimizing payment failures that often occur when switching to third-party apps for completing the process.

  • Intel Sells 1.18 Million Arm Holdings Shares, Earns $146.7 Million

    Intel, which is cutting thousands of jobs as it struggles to stay relevant in the chip industry, sold its 1.18 million share stakes in British chip firm Arm Holdings in the second quarter, a regulatory filing showed on Tuesday.

    Intel would have raised about $146.7 million (roughly Rs. 1,231 crore) from the sale, based on the average price of Arm’s stock between April and June, according to Reuters calculations.

    The chipmaker said earlier this month that it would cut more than 15 percent of its workforce and suspend its dividend amid a pullback in spending on traditional data center semiconductors and a shift towards AI chips, where it lags rivals such as Nvidia.

  • Terminator: Survivors Game Delayed to 2025 by Nacon: What It Means for Fans

    Terminator: Survivors, the open-world sci-fi survival game, has been delayed till 2025, publisher Nacon announced Monday. The game, developed by Nacon Studio Milan, was set to be released in early access on Steam on October 24, 2024. It has now been pushed back to an unspecified date next year. Nacon said that delay would provide the development team behind Terminator: Survivors the time needed to craft a game that “meets the players’ expectations.”

    According to Nacon, additional time was needed to build a post-apocalyptic world that lives up to the Terminator franchise. “This deferral of the game’s release was a tough decision to make, however we believe that this additional time will enable us to ensure that our vision of the post-apocalyptic world of Terminator meets the expected level of quality,” Marco Ponte, CEO and creative director of Nacon Studio Milan, said in a press statement.

  • Creating Livermorium with Titanium: Key Step to Unbinilium Synthesis

    Researchers at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have successfully used a novel method to create livermorium, one of the heaviest elements known. This achievement, involving a titanium beam, represents a significant step towards producing even heavier elements, specifically unbinilium, which has 120 protons.

    The process employed in this breakthrough involves heating the rare isotope titanium-50 to nearly 1650 °C (3000 °F). This high-temperature releases ions that are then directed at another element, in this case, plutonium. This new approach to element synthesis has successfully produced livermorium, but its true importance lies in its potential to help create unbinilium, the heaviest element on the periodic table.

    Livermorium, first synthesised in 2000, has an atomic number of 116, making it lighter than Oganesson, the current heaviest element. The successful creation of livermorium using the titanium method is seen as a critical test run for the more ambitious goal of synthesizing unbinilium. Researchers believe that by fusing titanium with californium-249, they can achieve the creation of unbinilium more efficiently than previous methods allowed.

    The experiment at Berkeley Lab took 22 days, during which the team managed to produce just two atoms of livermorium. Despite the modest yield, the experiment demonstrated that the titanium beam method is viable for synthesizing superheavy elements. This marks a return to the forefront of the superheavy element race for Berkeley Lab, which was a leader in elemental discovery during the 20th century.

    The successful creation of livermorium with titanium validates this new production method and sets the stage for future attempts to create unbinilium. Scientists are optimistic that this approach will lead to the synthesis of unbinilium, offering new opportunities to study the properties of superheavy elements and the limits of atomic nuclei. This research, crucial for exploring the theoretical ‘island of stability,’ is expected to provide valuable insights into the behavior of atoms at their most extreme.

    Google has commenced the testing of Wear OS 5.1, its upcoming operating system (OS) for Android-based wearables such as smartwatches, according to a report. Test builds of the OS are said to have been spotted for the Pixel Watch 2 which suggests that it may be based on a different version of Android. Google first announced its Wear OS 5 platform at I/O 2024 in May, highlighting several of its features such as enhancements to the Watch Face Format and grid-based app launcher.
