  • Decline of Wearables Market in India: Q2 2024 Report

    The wearables market in India saw a decline for the first time ever in the second quarter of 2024, according to a report from a market research firm. The total units shipped in Q2 2024 fell 10.0 percent year-over-year (YoY) to 29.5 million units. The first half of 2024 saw a 4.7 percent decline in wearables shipping to 55.1 million units. The reasons for this decline reportedly include cautious inventory stocking by the vendors to help focus on clearing old stock before the festive season, as well as fewer new launches from companies.

    According to International Data Corporation (IDC), the total wearable shipments in India fell from 32.8 million units in Q2 2023 to 29.5 million units in Q2 2024, marking a 10.0 percent YoY decline. The wearables include smart rings and smart glasses alongside smartwatches, wrist or smart bands, and earphones. It excludes traditional analog and digital watches.

    Smartwatch shipments dropped 27.4 percent YoY to 9.3 million units in Q2 2024. Within this segment, Noise had the largest market share with 25.7 percent, followed by Fire-Boltt and Boat with 24.2 and 11.6 percent, respectively.

    Redmi Note 14 series have recently been doing rounds of the rumour mill. The Redmi Note 14, Note 14 Pro, and Note 14 Pro+ models were recently spotted on the IMEI database. Although not a lot is known about these phones, the base Redmi Note 14 has reportedly received a 3C certification suggesting its charging details. Notably, the Redmi Note 14 lineup is expected to succeed the Redmi Note 13 series, which was launched in India in January this year.

    According to a Gizmochina report, an upcoming Redmi smartphone with model number 24094RAD4C was spotted on the 3C certification website. This is speculated to be the Redmi Note 14 and the listing suggests that the phone will come with an MDY-17-EE charger. The report adds that this charger is expected to support up to 45W wired fast charging.

Now, a support page on the Samsung France website bearing the handset’s alleged model number has been spotted online, hinting at its impending launch. Notably, Samsung launched the current Fan Edition model, the Galaxy S23 FE in October 2023.

    The supposed support page for the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE bears the model number SM-S721B, which was also spotted in the alleged Geekbench leaks of the smartphone. While the page does not provide any details about the purported smartphone, it confirms that it will come equipped with dual-SIM capabilities.

    Galaxy AI features have been slowly expanding to include more Samsung smartphones. The artificial intelligence (AI) suite of features arrived with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series and later was expanded to last year’s flagships and the Galaxy S23 FE. Last month, it also debuted on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6. Now, as per a new report, these Galaxy AI features might get added to two Galaxy A series smartphones launched this year.

    According to SamMobile, Samsung might be looking to expand the Galaxy AI features further to newer devices. Citing unnamed sources, the publication claimed that these features might soon debut on the Galaxy A35 and the Galaxy A55 models.

    Poco Buds X1 were launched in India on Thursday alongside the Poco M6 Plus 5G. The true wireless stereo (TWS) earphones are equipped with 12.4mm dynamic titanium drivers and are said to offer up to 40dB hybrid active noise cancellation (ANC). The earphones have an IP54 rating for dust and splash resistance, although the accompanying magnetic charging case does not have an IP-rated build. The TWS earphones are offered in a single colourway and will be available for purchase in the country later this month.

    Poco Buds X1 is priced in India at Rs. 1,699 and will be available for purchase in the country via Flipkart, starting August 5. The earphones are offered in a single Titanium colorway.

    OnePlus Open Apex Edition will launch in India and globally on August 7, the company announced on Thursday. With its debut, OnePlus will introduce a new colourway for the smartphone. However, the changes may not be just cosmetic, with a listing on the official website suggesting this new edition could also get upgrades in terms of RAM and storage. Notably, OnePlus Open was introduced in India in October 2023 in a single 16GB RAM+512GB storage configuration.

    The OnePlus Open Apex Edition will come in a new colorway called Crimson Shadow. As the name suggests, it may be a shade of crimson in the vegan leather style. The company says this colorway is inspired by its signature “Never Settle” red. This new option is expected to join the existing colorways of the OnePlus Open, which are Emerald Dusk and Voyager Black.

    Poco M6 Plus 5G was launched in India on Thursday. The smartphone is equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 AE (accelerated edition) chipset paired with up to 8GB of RAM. It comes with a dual-sided glass design and an IP53-rated build for dust and splash resistance. The phone also carries a 108-megapixel dual rear camera unit and a 6.79-inch 120Hz full-HD+ display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The handset joins the Poco M6 5G and the Poco M6 Pro 5G in the lineup.

    Poco M6 Plus 5G starts in India at Rs. 13,499 for the 6GB + 128GB option, while the 8GB + 128GB variant is priced at Rs. 14,499. The phone will be available for purchase in the country via Flipkart starting at 12pm IST on August 5. It is offered in three color options — Graphite Black, Ice Silver, and Misty Lavender.
