Moon’s ‘Dormant’ Past Challenged by New Evidence of Tectonic Activity

A new study was published in The Planetary Science Journal on January 21, 2025. It has shaken long-held beliefs about the moon’s geological history. Researchers from the Smithsonian Institution and the University of Maryland have found evidence. It suggests that the moon may be far more tectonically active than previously thought.  

The study focuses on 266 previously undocumented small ridges on the far side of the moon. These ridges, located within ancient volcanic regions estimated to be 3.2 to 3.6 billion years old, appear remarkably young compared to their surroundings. The research team used crater counting. This method estimates the age of a surface based on the number of impact craters. They concluded that these ridges likely formed within the last 200 million years.  

The surface has more time to accumulate impact marks,” Jaclyn Clark explained. She is an Assistant Research Scientist at the University of Maryland’s Department of Geology. This information was provided in a university statement. “The surface has more time to accumulate impact marks.” The team analyzed the ridges cutting through existing impact sites. They counted the craters on their surfaces. With these observations, the team determined that these formations were active as recently as 160 million years ago.  

This discovery challenges the conventional understanding of the moon as a geologically dormant world. These young ridges suggest that tectonic forces are active beneath the lunar surface. They drive geological activity. This finding has significant implications for future lunar exploration and the potential establishment of lunar infrastructure. Understanding the moon’s ongoing geological activity is crucial for selecting safe and stable locations for lunar bases and other facilities. It also raises new questions about the moon’s internal structure and thermal history, potentially opening new avenues for scientific investigation.
