Climate Change Threatens Mass Extinction, Study Warns

A sobering new study published in Science reveals a concerning truth. A significant portion of Earth’s biodiversity could face extinction by the end of the century. This is if greenhouse gas emissions continue unabated. Biologist Mark Urban from the University of Connecticut conducted this research. He analyzed over 450 scientific papers. His goal was to assess the impact of climate change on species survival.

A Looming Threat

The study paints a grim picture of the future, highlighting the urgent need for climate action. If global temperatures rise by 1.5 degrees Celsius, approximately 180,000 species could be at risk of extinction. This risk doubles to 1 in 20 species with a 2.7-degree Celsius increase. Under more severe warming scenarios of 4.3 and 5.4 degrees Celsius, the extinction rates could soar to 15% and 30%, respectively.

Amphibians and Ecosystem Vulnerability

Amphibians, particularly reliant on stable weather patterns for their life cycles, emerge as highly vulnerable. Ecosystems in isolated regions like South America, Australia, and New Zealand face significant risks. They have limited migration and adaptation opportunities. Mountain and island ecosystems face unique challenges, as surrounding habitats often lack suitable conditions for migration.

The study emphasizes the crucial role of global policy efforts in mitigating climate change and protecting biodiversity. Urban stresses the need for decisive action, urging policymakers to implement stricter emission reduction measures and prioritize conservation efforts. We can reduce the devastating consequences of mass extinction. To achieve this, we must address the root causes of climate change. Additionally, protecting vulnerable ecosystems is essential.
