Vodafone Idea Launches 5G Services in Mumbai

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has announced the commercial rollout of its 5G services in India. Mumbai will be the first city to receive the services in March. Following Mumbai, Vi plans to expand its 5G services to Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Patna in April 2025 ¹.

According to Vi’s Q3 2024-25 report, the company has been driving investments and accelerating capital expenditure deployment. Vi’s CEO, Akshaya Moondra, stated that the phased rollout of 5G services is underway, targeting key geographies ¹.

Vi has expanded its 5G network. It has also reported a rapid expansion of its 4G population coverage. This coverage increased from 1.03 billion in March 2024 to 1.07 billion by the end of December 2024. The company’s 4G subscriber base also grew from 125.6 million in Q3 FY24 to 126 million at the end of Q3 FY25.

Vi’s total subscriber base stood at 199.8 million in the December quarter, down from 215.2 million in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year. However, the company reported a 4.7% increase in average revenue per user (ARPU) from Rs. 166 in Q2 to Rs. 173 in Q3 ¹.

Notably, Vi’s 5G rollout comes after the company first started 5G operations in 19 circles. This occurred across the country in December 2024. However, this was not a commercial rollout. Both Airtel and Jio had launched their 5G services in 2022.
