GitHub Copilot Gets Major Update with New Agent Mode, Copilot Edits, and Project Padawan

GitHub, the Microsoft-owned coding platform, has announced significant updates to its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, GitHub Copilot. The updates introduce a new agent mode. They also include Copilot Edits. Additionally, there is a first look at Project Padawan, an autonomous software engineer (SWE) AI agent.

New Agent Mode

The new agent mode in GitHub Copilot allows the chatbot to automatically iterate on code. It can analyze errors generated by the code. This mode allows the chatbot to be more independent and proactive, recognizing errors and fixing them without human intervention. Additionally, it can analyze run-time errors, suggest terminal commands, and complete subtasks necessary to finish a primary task.

Copilot Edits

Copilot Edits, first announced at the GitHub Universe in October 2024, is now generally available in VS Code. This feature enables developers to specify files for code rewriting. They can describe the desired changes using natural language. Copilot Edits then contextually understands the command and makes inline changes to the files. Users can review, accept, and iterate on the suggested changes.

Project Padawan

GitHub has also unveiled Project Padawan, an autonomous SWE AI agent that will be integrated into Copilot later this year. This AI agent can be assigned issues using any GitHub client in Copilot, producing fully tested pull requests. After completing a task, the chatbot assigns human reviewers to the pull request and automatically resolves any feedback.
