Gurman, in his latest “Power On” newsletter, confirmed Apple’s ongoing investigation. They are exploring potential applications of cameras within the AirPods ecosystem. However, he did not provide specific details regarding the launch timeline or the exact functionalities of these camera-equipped earbuds.
Health Tracking and Enhanced Spatial Audio
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s earlier reports suggested that the AirPods Pro 3 might incorporate cameras. These cameras could function as infrared sensors, similar to the Face ID system on iPhones. These sensors could potentially enhance the spatial audio experience, particularly when used in conjunction with Apple’s Vision Pro mixed-reality headset.
Furthermore, Kuo suggested that the cameras could enable “in-air gesture control,” allowing users to interact with the AirPods through gestures. He predicted that these advanced AirPods would likely enter mass production in 2026. They could launch later that year or in 2027.
