  • 2024 PT5: New Mini-Moon Orbiting Earth Discoveries

A new celestial body, named 2024 PT5, has recently joined Earth’s orbit. This marks an intriguing development in our understanding of near-Earth objects. This mini-moon was discovered on August 7, 2024, by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System in Sutherland, South Africa. It is approximately 10 meters (33 feet) in diameter. It officially entered Earth’s gravitational field on September 29, 2024. It will remain in orbit until November 25, 2024. This period offers a unique opportunity for scientific study.

Dr. Nico Cappelluti is an astrophysicist at the University of Miami. He highlighted the significance of such near-Earth asteroids. He stated, “These objects provide valuable insights into the early processes that shaped our Solar System.” The near-Earth asteroid is part of the Arjuna asteroid belt, where space rocks follow similar orbits to Earth. According to Dr. Cappelluti, these asteroids occasionally become temporarily trapped by Earth’s gravitational pull. This allows for observational opportunities. These observations can enhance our knowledge of their compositions and orbits.
